How to talk to your teenager about career without it turning into a fight

Most career conversations between Indian parents and their teenagers fail in the same way: they begin as "how is your prep going?" and end as "you don't understand my pressure." After observing 600+ parent–teen joint sessions on Career Call, here's the structure that actually works.
Step 1: Separate the conversation from the marks
Pick a time that is not within 48 hours of a mock test, a parent-teacher meeting, or a coaching review. Career conversations that happen in the emotional shadow of recent marks are not career conversations — they are post-mortems. Schedule the talk for a Saturday morning on a weekend with no recent results.
Step 2: Ask before telling, with a specific kind of question
Generic questions ("what do you want to do?") get generic answers. Specific questions get real answers. Try: "If you had to pick one thing about your current coaching that you genuinely dislike, what would it be?" Or: "Name one person in our family whose career you would NOT want — and why." Specificity creates honesty.
Step 3: Park the disagreement, don't resolve it
When you hear something that worries you — they're considering something different, they're burning out — your instinct will be to respond. Don't. Say "thank you for telling me. Let me think about this for a few days." Resolution within 30 seconds is how these conversations become arguments.
Step 4: Bring a third voice in
