Which Certifications Are Actually Worth It for Engineering Students in 2026

A student showed me a resume with eleven certificates and no projects, and could not answer a basic question from any of them. Certifications can be genuinely useful — but only three kinds are, and only in specific situations. Here is how to tell them apart before you spend the money.

A second-year student sent me his resume in July. It listed eleven certifications: four from a video course platform, three from a college workshop series, two from webinars he had attended, and two from a "summer training" programme his family had paid eighteen thousand rupees for. The projects section had one line in it. When I asked him to explain how a load balancer works — a topic covered in one of the certificates — he told me, honestly, that he had watched the videos at double speed and taken the quiz twice.

He had not been lazy. He had spent real money and a real summer doing what he had been told would make him employable. The advice was simply wrong, and it is repeated so widely — by coaching centres, by advertisements, by well-meaning seniors — that most students never think to question it.

Certifications are not worthless. Some are among the best value available to a student. But the ones that matter are a small minority, they matter for narrow reasons, and the difference between the useful ones and the decorative ones is not the price.

Why most certificates do nothing

Start with the mechanics of how a fresher resume is read. A recruiter spends well under a minute on it. In that time they are looking for evidence that you can do work, and evidence has a specific quality: it should be hard to obtain without the underlying skill.

A certificate of completion fails that test. Anyone can complete a course. The certificate proves attendance, not competence, and every recruiter knows this because they have seen thousands of them attached to candidates who could not answer basic questions on the subject. A section listing eleven of them actively hurts, because it signals that the candidate believes consumption is the same as capability.

Contrast that with a deployed project, a merged pull request, or an internship where somebody paid you. Those are hard to fake, which is exactly why they carry weight — the argument for deployed side projects over a polished CGPA applies with even more force to certificates. If you have twenty hours and a choice between finishing a course and shipping something small that runs, ship the thing.

The three kinds that are genuinely worth it

There are real exceptions, and they fall into three groups.

The first is proctored, industry-recognised certifications with a real exam — the cloud provider associate-level certifications, some networking and security credentials, and a handful of database and analytics ones. These are worth something because you can fail them. A proctored exam with a substantial pass mark is a filter, and filters carry information. They also map to specific job families: cloud and DevOps roles, infrastructure, security, data engineering.

The second is certifications that are a formal requirement or a strong convention in a particular field. Some security roles expect a specific credential. Some analytics and finance-adjacent roles treat a particular certification as table stakes. In those fields the certificate is not marketing; it is a licence to be considered.

The third is a course you take for the learning, where the certificate is a by-product you may not even list. A rigorous course that leaves you able to build something you could not build before has paid for itself regardless of what the PDF says. The test is simple: did your capability change?

That last row is not a joke. Interviewers pick items off resumes at random, and a certification you cannot discuss for two minutes converts from a neutral line into direct evidence that you decorate your resume.

Will a certification get me a job?

On its own, no — and this is the expectation that does the most damage, because students who believe it stop doing the things that actually generate offers.

What a good certification does is narrower and still useful. It can get you past a keyword filter for roles that explicitly list it. It can give a recruiter a reason to look twice at a candidate from a college they do not usually recruit at. It can give you a structured syllabus in a domain where you did not know what to learn, which is genuinely valuable when you are starting from nothing. And it gives you vocabulary — the words that let you follow a technical conversation about infrastructure without drowning in it.

What it cannot do is substitute for demonstrable work. In a shortlisting decision between a candidate with a cloud certification and no projects, and one with two deployed applications and no certificates, the second wins nearly every time. The combination — the certification plus something you built using what it taught — is what actually converts, because then the certificate is corroborating evidence rather than a standalone claim.

Are paid courses better than free ones?

Not in content, and often not in outcome. The best free material available today — official documentation, university lecture series, open curricula, and the tutorial ecosystem around every major technology — is at least as good as most paid courses, and frequently better, because it is maintained by the people who built the thing.

What paid courses genuinely buy is structure and commitment. A sequenced syllabus removes the decision fatigue of not knowing what to learn next, and having paid money makes some people finish. Those are real benefits, and if you know from experience that you do not finish free courses, the fee may be rational.

What paid courses do not buy is credibility. A recruiter does not treat a course certificate differently because it cost you money, and some of the most expensive programmes marketed to Indian students — the ones promising placement assistance in the advertisement and defining "assistance" very loosely in the contract — deliver the least. Before paying anything substantial, read the refund terms, ask to speak to two students who finished more than a year ago, and check whether the "placement partners" list is a partnership or a logo wall. What about AI and data-science certificates specifically?

This is where the marketing is heaviest right now, and where students are most likely to overspend. A great many programmes promise to make you an "AI engineer" in twelve weeks for a substantial fee, and almost none of them produce candidates who can be hired as one.

The reason is structural. Roles in machine learning and data science are, at entry level, unusually competitive and unusually evidence-driven — the shortlist is decided by what you have built and, increasingly, by whether you understand the fundamentals underneath the libraries. A certificate saying you completed a course on a framework does not answer either question. A notebook where you took a messy real dataset, cleaned it, made defensible modelling choices, and wrote up what did not work answers both.

That is not an argument against learning the material, which is genuinely valuable and increasingly expected across ordinary software roles too. It is an argument about where the money goes. Learn from free or cheap sources, spend your budget on nothing, and spend your time on two or three projects with real data. If you later find a specific employer or role that names a specific credential, buy it then, with a reason.

A sensible plan by year

If you want a default, this is the one I give students, and it starts with doing nothing.

In the first and second year, take zero certifications. Learn one language properly, build small things, and find out what you enjoy. Free material is entirely sufficient at this stage, and money spent here is almost always wasted because you do not yet know what you are aiming at.

In the third year, once you have a direction, one certification can make sense — but only if it maps to that direction and only alongside a project that uses it. A cloud associate certification plus one deployed application running on that cloud is a coherent story. The certification alone is not.

In the final year, add nothing new unless a specific job listing you are targeting names it. Your time is better spent on interview preparation, the online assessment round, and finishing work you can talk about.

After you start working, employers often pay for certifications and sometimes require them for internal progression. That is the point at which the expensive ones become genuinely worth taking — with someone else's money and a concrete reason.

How to list the ones you do have

Two rules. Put certifications near the bottom of the resume, below projects and experience, in two or three lines at most. And list only the ones you could be interviewed on.

If you have a proctored certification, name it with the issuing organisation and the year. If you have twelve completion certificates, list none of them and use the space instead for a project built with what you learned. "Built and deployed a containerised application on a cloud free tier" is a stronger line than any certificate name, and it is the same underlying learning made legible.

The exception is a genuinely rigorous course whose capstone you extended into real work. Then the interesting item is the work, and the course is a footnote to it.

What the eleven-certificate student did next

He removed ten of the eleven lines from his resume. Over the following semester he built two things end to end — a small web application deployed on a free tier, and an internal tool his department actually used for attendance — and took one cloud associate certification, because he had decided infrastructure was what he liked. He passed it in January.

He was hired in March, and in the interview the certification came up exactly once, in passing. The rest of the conversation was about the attendance tool: why he had built it that way, what broke, what he would change. That is the correct ratio, and it is the whole lesson. Certifications are a small supporting instrument. The work is the argument.
